Milan v Atalanta Live Commentary & Result, 24/07/2020, Serie A

Milan have won only one of their last seven home meetings with Atalanta, failing to score in five of those matches. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side won the reverse fixture 5-0 in December and are looking to win both games against today’s opponents in a single Serie A season for the first time since 2007-08.

Atalanta, who are without banned head coach Gasperini today, show three changes from the 1-0 win against Bologna on Tuesday. Timothy Castagne is suspended, with his place at right wing-back taken by Hateboer, while Caldara and Malinovskiy are in for benched pair Palomino and Pasalic.

Milan show four changes to their starting line-up on the back of the win over Sassuolo three days ago. Theo Hernandez and Ismael Bennacer as suspended, so in come Laxalt and Biglia, while Gabbia takes over from the injured Alessio Romagnoli. The other change is at right-back, with Calabria in for the absent Andrea Conti.

Subs: Mario Pasalic, Lennart Czyborra, Bosko Sutalo, Raoul Bellanova, Marco Sportiello, Timothy Castagne, Ebrima Colley, Jose Luis Palomino, Francesco Rossi, Jacopo Da Riva, Adrien Tameze, Luis Muriel.

ATALANTA XI (3-4-2-1): Pierluigi Gollini; Rafael Toloi, Mattia Caldara, Berat Djimsiti; Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon, Remo Freuler, Robin Gosens; Alejandro Gomez (c), Ruslan Malinovskiy; Duvan Zapata.

Subs: Rade Krunic, Antonio Donnarumma, Asmir Begovic, Lucas Paqueta, Leo Duarte, Giacomo Olzer, Marco Brescianini, Rafael Leao, Daniel Maldini, Samu Castillejo, Giacomo Bonaventura, Lorenzo Colombo.

MILAN XI (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer (c), Matteo Gabbia, Diego Laxalt; Franck Kessie, Lucas Biglia; Alexis Saelemaekers, Hakan Calhanoglu, Ante Rebic; Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Sixth-placed Milan also enter this fixture in good form having won three in a row and gone nine without a defeat in the league. Stefano Pioli’s side, who beat Sassuolo 2-1 in their most recent outing, are within two points of Roma in fifth, which would secure automatic qualification to next season’s Europa League group stage.

Atalanta enter this game unbeaten in 15 matches and are second in the table, still six points adrift of Juventus following the reigning champions’ shock 2-1 loss at Udinese on Thursday. Indeed, victory for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men here may well revive the title race, which would have ended yesterday had Juve won.
