Carabao Cup: Derby 1-2 Preston

Wayne Rooney
Preston beat Derby for the first time in 15 attempts, their last win coming in December 2008

Daniel Johnson scored a 92nd-minute penalty as Preston North End came from behind to beat 10-man Derby County and reach the Carabao Cup third round.

Jason Knight opened the scoring for Derby before Mike te Wierik was sent off for bringing down Sean Maguire.

Preston substitute Tom Barkhuizen fired a stunning equaliser and a handball gave the visitors a late penalty.

Johnson kept his cool to send Preston into a third-round tie against Brighton or Portsmouth.

Preston should have been in front after a one-sided first half with ex-Manchester United youngster Josh Harrop testing the reflexes of Kelle Roos, and Jayden Stockley firing a good chance over.

They were punished straight after half-time when Graeme Shinnie broke down the left and set up Knight, who scored at the second attempt.

Te Wierik was dismissed shortly afterwards and Preston found a way through when Barkhuizen crashed a breathtaking half-volley in off the crossbar.

As penalties loomed, a loose hand from Lee Buchanan in the box presented Johnson with the chance to win the tie and he calmly sent Roos the wrong way from the spot.
